The military uses a similar strategy when attempting to reach a consensus - the most junior person in a room proposes a solution, and it is commented on up the chain. Although it can be constrained by the initial solution posed, it generally will not be because the senior people will not be constrained by the prior comments since they are from more junior people. On the other hand, the junior people get to see the logic used by their seniors in postulating solutions to a problem.

Hi Stephen,
I wanted to echo your comment about not starting with collaboration. It's critical to comprehensive idea generation.

As a leadership and management coach who conducts creativity and innovation workshops all over North America, I've discovered that it's essential that people are given mental and emotional permission to access their own ideation space with no compromise.

The very word collaborate relays an unconscious message to accommodate. If that is introduced too early in the process, it short-circuits the individual's full creative process and thus the production of fully manifested ideas.

That then adversely impacts the core intent of round one of the ideation process - generating as many pure, unedited ideas as possible.
