I was searching the net in an effort to learn how to publish my material that I have been gathering for years and by design stumbled upon your site. IT HAS BEEN PROFOUND! It is just exactly what I was looking for.

I expect to submit my copy within the next few weeks. Your information is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't know anything about publishing my first book but I continued to write the material by faith. I wanted to fast publish but all I could find was the run around. Your writing made me feel like I was face to face with you. It was like you were leading me by my hand. This is so awesome.

My work will be out on the market soon and am looking forward to great success. I w ill be publishing my first book which will most definitely make the Best Sellers list.

Thanks for your expertise!

Mitch, great question.

It is very difficult to protect ideas. Copyrights are one way, but they only protect the "expression" of the idea...not the idea. Patents can protect certain types of ideas, but are costly and not right for every situation. An IP attorney can help answer more questions on that.

I don't know anything about you or your business, so it is difficult for me to judge what you are trying to protect...and why. For me, my books represent only a small slice of the intellectual property that I have. When people read my books, they want more. So giving away my content is good. I get hired to give speeches when people read my books.

However, if your concern is that "competitors" will get their hands on your materials, I'm not sure there is much you can do about that. At least, when doing small print runs, you can control distribution and limit who gets copies. The good news is, the time to market with this approach is much faster than traditional publishing. Therefore it could potentially protect your ideas even more.

I'll give you one piece of advice a mentor gave me when I was working on my Goal-Free Living book. I didn't want to publicize the concept too much before the book came out for a variety of reasons. My mentor thought that was the silliest thing he ever heard. He said that I should be building a platform NOW for a book that is coming out in the future. Get known for it - and the concept. Build the brand before the book comes out. Then when the book does come out, you own that space. That feels like pretty good advice to me.

If you want to chat about it more, just drop me an email...

Are there any intellectual property considerations? I don't want anyone to use my ideas or concepts while I am trying it out. Is there any way to protect my ideas as I am trying to go from 50 copies to 10,000 copies?

Connie, I was not aware of any self-publishing opportunities through Wiley. I did a quick Google search and a look at their website and did not see anything. If they do offer it, I assume it is much like Pearson's "custom publishing" group. It might be a step up from regular self-publishing in terms of credibility. However assuming that the books use a different imprint, it would not offer you much. I doubt that Wiley would dilute their core brand with self-published books. Maybe it is something akin to Random House's "partnership" with Xlibris? If you can provide me more details, I am happy to give you my two cents.

BRAVO! What so many promise (names withheld out of kindness) YOU deliver! Thank you for sharing such a clear, concise progression. For once I came away both informed AND empowered! I especially appreciated your keen, pragmatic tips around recording. The detailed step by step instruction of how to convert sound into text was really helpful. Likewise all the specific links and references to the various software and service providers for print on demand publishing. (An option which just by itself makes this an eye-opening read).

Above all, I appreciated your strategic allocation of resources, and savvy suggestions around responding to initial readers questions via a recorded conversation- which then becomes a very streamlined way to make revisions in the text. (Now I just have to figure out how to go gravator!)

With abiding admiration and heartfelt appreciation, Rob Peck
