Hi again, Stephen,

Forgot to mention that I liked this article so much, I listed it under "Articles" on the Recommended Resources page of my Innovation Outcomes website. And about a week ago, I had started drafting a review to post on Amazon.com for your book, 24/7 Innovation. I thought the Appendix had such useful information for me, that others should know about it too, and I've specifically mentioned it in my review.

Hello Stephen,

I sent you a LinkedIn invitation after reading your book and am now "talking" to you as well!

So many of my clients believe that innovation is something to be done in better times, yet as you've noted in this article, innovation can actually help to "recession-proof" a business.

My experience is that many of my clients understand how process innovation can help reduce operating costs, but still don't understand what open innovation is and how it can reduce R & D costs. I was glad to see you address this, in your article.

But your last point was the best! I had a solo consulting practice for many years, but in the last year, began informally partnering with other consultants who had complementary skill sets and/or who could increase my firm's geographic and functional reach.

When many people think of innovation, they think of large companies with well-funded R & D functions, but innovation is key to entrepreneurs and even individuals who may not be "recession-proofed" and who are now reinventing themselves through self-innovation.

Thanks for the great article. I saved it in a Word document for future reference!

I was reading a business book about innovation during recession, and it might be something you'd be interested in checking out. It's called 'Exploiting Chaos' and you can read the first chapter at www.exploitingchaos.com

Wow Steve, that one balances view on business as a science and an art. Impressive. And I must thank you for point #6, because I was personally sticking on with such a strategy and now that you have corroborated it, I feel more certain.

Ivan, you are so right. In fact, the story is one of the most powerful tools we have right now. A lot of my work these days is in using creativity to develop new branding ideas. It's easier to reshape a brand than it is to introduce a new product (in most cases). A good "story" should have an emotional or empathetic appeal to the audience. As Aristotle once said, "Ethos, Pathos, Logos." Credibility, then empathy, then logic. Too often we sell with logic and that is the last thing people want to hear...especially now.
